Dutch Greenhouse Delta is an initiative of the Municipality of Westland and a number of international horticultural companies. The platform was created to meet the increasingly pressing demand from the world's major population centres for sufficient fresh, safe and healthy food.
Cities are getting larger and larger
By 2025, 80 percent of the global population will live in urban areas of which 15% in the world’s 10 largest cities.
The Silicon Valley of greenhouse horticulture
The Netherlands is the world’s second largest exporter of agricultural products in absolute terms after the US. Greenhouse horticulture accounts for 30% of these exports. Dutch greenhouse horticulture in the Netherlands has a unique ecosystem involving greenhouse builders, installation companies, IT companies, seed breeders, growers and research institutes. The Westland region is regarded internationally as the Silicon Valley of greenhouse horticulture. This knowhow is badly needed, and the enormous demand for total food solutions will require a far more intensive cooperation between the various private and public parties.
Collaboration and international visibility
Dutch Greenhouse Delta was created to strengthen this much-needed collaboration, and raise the profile of the Netherlands even further as both experts in the field of greenhouse horticulture and the ideal partner in addressing the huge food challenges facing the world.
