Total Design makes the economic value of movement visible

The Netherlands is the European champion in sitting still, even at work. This has effects that go beyond health: it costs companies billions every year because of sick leave, lower productivity, and people quitting. But this economic side is often overlooked. On behalf of the Beweegalliantie, Total Design raised awareness of this urgent issue with a strong concept based on research, clear insights, and an explainervideo.

From empty promises to concrete action

The call from the Beweegalliantie is clear: stop with nice intentions and empty ambitions in annual reports. Take real action on movement. Measure it, manage it, and report it. Because: “What you don’t measure, doesn’t move.”

Facts that make you think:

Our research, carried out in collaboration with TNO, Motivaction, and IssueMakers—shows:

– 72% of sit-stand desks are hardly used.

– Only 11% of managers actively encourage movement.

– 74% of employees see no serious effort from their employer to promote movement.

– 65% of organizations lack concrete vitality goals in their strategy.

The consequences are serious:

– Sick leave costs employers 8.3 billion euros every year.

– 5 million people spend most of their workday sitting.

– 35% experience physical complaints.

– 47% long for work with more opportunities to move.

From insight to impact

Based on these insights, we developed an explainer video and media strategy that led to wide media coverage for the Beweegalliantie:

– A large spread in AD and all regional editions.

– Interview on Radio 1.

– Article in the daily newspaper Het Parool.

– Coverage in the morning broadcast of Omroep WNL.

With this, the Beweegalliantie strongly positioned itself with politicians, media, and businesses as a driver of vitality as an economic theme.

Take action. Make it measurable. Make it visible.

Newspaper media coverage

Our message to executives and HR leaders: invest not only in vitality but also show what it delivers. Make movement measurable and report it as a business result. Only then will it be taken seriously and real change will happen.
