Colorful heritage

In the early 19th century, a doctor on Curaçao noted that many people had eye problems, which he attributed to the sun’s reflection on the white houses. He urged the island’s governor to introduce an ordinance requiring homeowners to paint their houses in vibrant colors. This law was in effect for about a hundred years, and even in the early 20th century, houses were still painted in a colorful palette.

Walking through the streets of Curaçao, you are enchanted by the profusion of colors – blue, yellow, pink – that pass before your eyes. Something we got to experience firsthand ourselves. It was immediately clear to us: the colorful center of Willemstad deserves its place on the UNESCO World Heritage List!
