The new AI stamps

Typical Dutch 2024

PostNL will release the stamp sheet Typically Dutch – cows on 2 January 2024. The issue is the 1st of this year’s series Typically Dutch. The multi-year series started in 2020 and is dedicated in 2024 to the animals we know best and that are closest to us. The 6 equal stamps feature value 1 for mail up to 20 grams with a destination within the Netherlands. The price for a sheet of 6 stamps is €6.54. Our senior graphic designer Adam Lane, executive creative director Edwin van Praet, and concept director Huub van Veenhuijzen created the design of Typically Dutch- cows. They organized a brainstorming session with colleagues to develop ideas collectively in small groups. They combined Typical Dutch subjects with different decoration styles and found that Delftware was most effective, while other styles are still unknown to AI.

The team chose animal duos because they create a sense of familiarity, similar to seeing a double portrait of children. The desired situation, lighting, and position of the animal and viewers were discussed. Refinements were then applied, such as the eyes, the size of the cow, and the positioning of the animals closer together or further apart.

Within the Typically Dutch series, fans can expect more beautiful stamp sheets later this year.
Dogs will be released on 12 February, followed by horses on 25 March, songbirds on 13 May, and cats on 12 August.

Artificial Intelligence

AI refers to learning computer systems. These AI systems can extrapolate, make decisions, make choices, and come up with interpretations based on large amounts of data and algorithms. The developments in the field of Artificial Intelligence are rapid and its applications are found everywhere: from facial recognition on smartphones to self-driving cars and from smart thermostats to deep fakes (digitally manipulated images, sound, and text). A separate discipline within AI is generative art, where the computer algorithm creates an original artwork or design.
