Natuurkracht
Helping nature bounce back
Challenge
The devastating floods of July 2021 also hit the Dutch province of Limburg. Nature confronted us with the harsh consequences of climate change and made one thing clear: we can no longer wait for policy or consensus. For the fund and innovation programme Natuurkracht (Power of Nature), this was the starting point for a bold ambition of inspiring and activating at least 1,000 people in South Limburg to give nature a helping hand in restoring balance within 2.5 years. From farmers to hobby gardeners, and from citizens to policymakers. Everyone can contribute. Sometimes with small actions, like installing a rain barrel. Sometimes with bigger steps, like transforming farmland into natural landscapes or forests.
Idea
Raising awareness about nature’s need for support and encouraging involvement are more urgent than ever. It requires a shift in perspective. In collaboration with WWF, Natuurmonumenten, the Natuur- en Milieufederatie Limburg, and with support from the Dutch Postcode Lottery, Natuurkracht shows what happens when we see nature as an ally. And choose to work with it. And with each other. The campaign, built around the central question “What would nature do in case of flooding?”, is an open invitation to become part of the solution. To think along, participate, and grow together.
Result
With the Natuurkracht campaign, we sparked an organic movement. The online platform, filled with knowledge and ideas, grew into an interactive network that took root beyond the screen. In gardens, meadows, and landscapes. The campaign reached over 300,000 people. But its true impact goes beyond numbers: a landscape that blossoms and a community moving in harmony with nature. Six municipalities in Limburg joined the initiative, thousands of people took action, and more and more are spreading the message. Through the Natuurkracht Fund, over 1 million euros has already flowed into seventeen projects that give nature room to breathe again. From hillside hedgerows to mini forests and educational programmes.
Quote
I find it inspiring to see how residents, entrepreneurs, and municipalities in the Geul and Gulp valleys recognise the importance of nature for a liveable environment. And truly want to take action.
